Dr. Matthew Sloan is a scientist in the Institute for Mental Health Policy Research at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH) and and an Associate Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology at the University of Toronto.
Dr. Sloan received his MD and MSc from McGill University, followed by a postdoctoral Fellowship at the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, National Institutes of Health. Before joining CAMH, he was an Addiction Psychiatry Fellow in the Department of Psychiatry at Yale University.
Areas of Research
The goal of Dr. Sloan’s research program is to discover novel ways to treat substance use disorders (SUD). The main foci of this research program are: (1) testing new SUD pharmacotherapies and other treatments using rigorous clinical trials, (2) developing personalized medicine approaches to SUD treatment to increase the efficiency of care, and (3) increasing access to SUD treatment through innovative telemedicine and virtual care delivery strategies. Dr. Sloan’s team uses various methods to achieve these objectives including human laboratory studies, observational studies, and clinical trials. Additional areas of interest include emotion regulation and addiction; pain and addiction; and the role of the endocannabinoid system in addiction.
